I’ve been sitting here for nearly two hours, trying to write a poignant and touching post. My eyes keep filling with tears and I can’t see the screen. So this is going to be brief, please pretend that it’s quality writing, and I’ll hope the spellchecker corrects what I can’t see clearly.
My Aunt Pauline passed away almost two years ago. It was fast, it was furious, and she was far too young. Pancreatic cancer is a mofo that I wouldn’t wish on my very worst enemy.
Loveymom makes the best banana bread in the whole world. Of all the things that she bakes wonderfully, I’d call this her signature recipe.
When we lost Pauline, my mom renamed the recipe in her honor. Now it’s even more special to our family. And if she’s giving it to a new friend for the first time, she gets to share a little about her amazingly wonderful baby sister.

PAULINE (BANANA) BREAD
1 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
1/4 cup sour milk (1 teaspoon white vinegar plus milk, let sit for 10 minutes)
3 thinly sliced ripe bananas
- Heat oven to 325F
- Cream sugar and shortening together. Add vanilla and eggs; mix well
- Add powder, soda, and salt; stir in well.
- Alternately add flour and sour milk, mix until well combined. Fold in bananas.
- Bake for about an hour (until tester comes out clean) in a greased and floured tube pan, or two mini loaf pans (reduce baking time).
- Cool on wire rack. Freezes well.
