Grover’s velvet moon suede shoes (or, things which are blue)
March 30, 2011When my friend V turned 40 last spring, she decided to throw a party for a few close friends. A girls’ night, if you will, composed of a half-dozen women from the different parts of her life. We had a great time catching up with some old friends, and making a few new ones. We played games, drank a lot of wine, and everybody brought a dish to share. I volunteered for the cake (well, these cupcakes, to be exact). The recipe name sounds intimidating, but they were rather straightforward to make. The cakes themselves were moist, chocolatey, and delicious. I was more worried about the frosting. Seven minute frosting? What the heck is that? I was nervous, but it was simply a matter of reading the recipe through, having the ingredients all measured out and lined up before I started, and then following one step at a time.
V loveslovesLOVES the color blue, so once the frosting was made I tinted it in her honor. Then it was time to make petals, because SPRING = FLOWERS!!!! Using my kitchen scissors, I took marshmallows and cut each one into several pieces. The pressure from the scissors distorted them from round into a more petalesque shape. It also causes the edges to curl a little, giving you beautiful flowery pieces with hardly any effort. Honestly, I think the most annoying part was cleaning the sticky scissors once I was all done. Arrange five petals on top of the icing, pop a Jujubee or small gumdrop in the middle, and viola – cupcake rock star!!! Seriously, that simple, and the crowd oohs and aahs all over them, very satisfying.
V turns 41 tomorrow. While I won’t be celebrating with her on the actual day this year, I will be thinking of her, and what a wonderful time we had. If I can usher in my next decade with as much humor, grace, and style as V, I’ll count myself blessed. Happy 41st, my friend! You’ll always be older than me!!!
I loved reading this and seeing your amazing Spring cupcakes. What a great idea for the petals!
Isn’t my niece awesome??!!! Love the stories that go
with the postings.
